Method
Step 1: Prepare the onions
- Cut the onions in half, remove the skins, and slice them into thick wedges. Separate the wedges into individual petals.

Step 2: Mix the dry coating
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3: Dip the petals
- Pour buttermilk into another bowl. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk, then coat it thoroughly in the seasoned flour mixture.

Step 4: Heat the oil
- Heat vegetable oil to 350°F in a deep fryer or pot. Make sure the oil is hot enough for crispy frying.

Step 5: Fry until golden
- Fry the onion petals in batches for 2–3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pot.

Step 6: Drain and serve
- Remove the petals with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes
I love serving these onion petals hot with a creamy ranch or spicy mayo.
