  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Method
 

Step 1: Sauté the aromatics
  1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook for about 3–4 minutes until soft and translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

  1. Sprinkle in cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well so the onions are coated in spices and cook for 1 minute to release the flavors.

  1. Pour in the drained black beans along with water or vegetable broth. Stir everything together and bring to a gentle simmer.
