Step 1: Prepare the bread
- I start by spreading softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. This is what gives you that golden, crispy crust you’re looking for.

Step 2: Assemble the sandwich
- Place one slice of bread butter-side down on a cutting board. I layer the American cheese and cheddar cheese evenly, then top it with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.

Step 3: Toast the sandwich
- Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and gently place the sandwich in the pan. I let it cook slowly so the bread crisps up while the cheese melts perfectly.

Step 4: Flip and finish
- Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side until it’s golden brown and the cheese is fully melted. Remove from heat, slice, and serve warm.
